Mahadasha and Antardasha: How Vedic Planetary Periods Nest

The levels of the dasha system
- Mahadasha — major period (6–20 years).
- Antardasha (bhukti) — sub-period within the mahadasha (months to about 3 years).
- Pratyantardasha — sub-sub-period (days to months).
- Sookshma and prana dashas — finer levels used for precise timing.
How antardasha length is calculated
Antardasha length = (mahadasha years × antardasha planet's years) ÷ 120. For example, Venus antardasha in Saturn mahadasha = 19 × 20 ÷ 120 = 3.17 years, or about 3 years 2 months. The nine sub-periods always add up to the full mahadasha.
The mahadasha years are: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — 120 years in total.
Reading them together
Traditional practice reads the antardasha lord in relation to the mahadasha lord: their friendship or enmity, their mutual house positions (for example 6/8 or 2/12 relationships are considered harder), and the houses each rules from the ascendant. A strong mahadasha with a weak antardasha lord can produce a difficult stretch within an otherwise good period, and vice versa.
Finding your current periods
Your starting mahadasha comes from the nakshatra of your natal Moon, and the balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through it. This is why an accurate birth time matters. Any Vedic birth chart calculator will list your mahadasha and antardasha dates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
The mahadasha is the major period (years); the antardasha is a sub-period within it. Both are read together for timing events.
Which antardasha comes first in a mahadasha?
Always the mahadasha lord's own antardasha, followed by the others in the fixed Vimshottari order.
Which is more important, mahadasha or antardasha?
The mahadasha sets the broad theme; the antardasha determines which results show up when. Astrologers weigh both, plus transits.
